First discovered by Europeans in 1799, the earliest specimens reaching London were assumed to be a hoax — a duck's bill stitched onto an otter-like body. It is real, and it remains one of the most amazing animals on the planet: a strange bundle of contradictions that hunts with its eyes closed. These fascinating facts about the platypus explain why no other animal comes close. For more strange locals, see our koala facts. What Is This Strange Animal? The platypus is a semi-aquatic, egg-laying mammal found only in Australia. It belongs to a tiny ancient group called monotremes — mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young, a line that split away more than 100 million years ago. Its closest living relative is the echidna. With the tail of a beaver, the bill and webbed feet of a duck, and the sleek swimmer's body, it looks like a stitched-together joke that nature built seriously. How Do They Hunt Underwater? It closes its eyes, ears and nostrils the moment it dives, so how does it find anything? Electroreceptors in its duck-like bill sense the tiny electric currents given off by prey — freshwater shrimps, insect larvae and worms — letting it detect prey underwater like a living metal detector. It scoops food and gravel off the creek bed with its bill, with each catch stored in cheek pouches until it surfaces to mash and grind the meal. A typical dive lasts under a minute, and the animal can handle around 8 hours of feeding a day in cold water. Is the Platypus Venomous? Yes — the males pack a genuinely nasty sting. Each hind foot carries a sharp spur connected to a toxin gland in the thigh. The sting cannot kill a human, but it causes pain so severe that morphine barely dulls it. A male platypus uses these spurs mainly in territorial fights with rival males during mating season. Does It Lay Eggs? Yes — the female lays one to three leathery eggs, about the size of a grape, and incubates them in a breeding burrow for about ten days. The tiny hatchlings, blind and barely 1 centimetre long, lap milk that oozes from mammary patches on the mother's belly — platypuses have no teat. The young stay in the burrow for around four months before learning to swim. Platypus Habitat: Where Do They Live? Platypus populations live in freshwater systems — Australia's rivers and lakes — along the eastern seaboard from the steamy tropics of Queensland down through New South Wales to the cold highlands of Tasmania. Their home range can stretch over several kilometres of waterway. They dig two kinds of tunnel: a simple resting burrow in the bank and deeper nesting burrows for breeding, often plugged to keep water out. The entrance usually sits just above the water level, often hidden under tree roots on the bank. Built for the Water The platypus owns some of the densest, waterproof fur in the animal kingdom — around 800 hairs per square millimetre — which traps an insulating layer of air so the animal stays warm while hunting in icy water. The sleek, streamline body glides with almost no drag, while the paddle-shaped front feet drive it along and the flat tail and back feet act as rudders. On land the webs fold back so the claws can walk and dig. Why Do They Glow Under UV Light? Biofluorescence! Under ultraviolet light, their brown-green coat glows a soft blue-green — a discovery made only in 2020. Scientists are still working out why; the glow may relate to camouflage in low light, or it may simply be a quirk of the coat proteins. It shares this eerie party trick with flying squirrels and some springtails, and it may be an ancient mammal trait. Platypus Conservation Status Whole populations are disappearing from many catchments, threatened by pollution, dams, land clearing and drought-shrunken streams. The official listing varies by state — Victoria lists them as vulnerable, and the national assessment is under review. Habitat degradation and fish nets that trap diving animals remain the biggest dangers. You can help conserve the species by keeping rivers clean, reporting sightings to wildlife agencies, and never leaving nets or lines in the water. How Has the Platypus Adapted to Its Habitat? Nearly every feature is an adaptation to life on land and in water: an insulating coat, a flat tail for storage and steering, electroreception for finding prey in murky water, paddling feet for speed, and cheeks built to carry food to the surface. Even the low body temperature of about 32°C helps it save energy in cold water. How Old Is the Oldest One? The oldest platypus on record, a female named Heidi who lived at Taronga Zoo, reached over 24 years in captivity. In the wild, most live around 4–8 years, though some reach 17 or more in quiet rivers — often more than 20 years in the wild where conditions are good. Why Is the Platypus So Unique? It is the only animal on Earth that combines all of these: it lays eggs, makes milk, has a bill that senses electricity, carries toxic ankle spurs, glows under UV light, and feeds its young without nipples. And even now, its genome is a puzzle, containing both mammal and reptile features in one animal. Are They Endangered? Not yet, but scientists fear they are sliding toward it. One species exists across the whole range, and some isolated groups have already vanished from rivers where they once thrived. Ongoing monitoring and clean-water protections are the key. Can You Keep One as a Pet? No. It is illegal in Australia, and none has ever bred successfully outside the country. Very few facilities worldwide keep them, and Australian law tightly restricts even that. If you want to see one, visit a licensed zoo or go platypus-spotting at dawn or dusk in known rivers. What Is on the Menu? A dinner of yabbies, shellfish and the occasional small fish — as much as 20% of its own body weight every single day, since it burns huge energy staying warm in cold water.
